I had my grading yesterday for my Nam Wah Pai martial arts. To get my green belt (the first grade). I had 75%, which I guess is a little above average as expected because of my taekwondo background training and all (i got my black belt in 2004ish), but not good enough for me:P because there were these two other boys in my class who had 81-83%, they got special mention and were told to stand up. I think they have some background training too. They were later told to spar with a senior for HIS grading and one of the boys even took that senior down. Anyway, it's only the first grade, so no one can jump double because we're only doing the basics. Only for the next belt they can. I gotta practise that darn hook kick which probably minused a lot of marks for me.
Anywayyy, after the 20+ of us newbies were graded, it was time for the seniors. Not only did they do patterning (a series of chereographed moves), they had to break like, single, double even triple layer sticks and bricks or tiles with their hands!
After that, they were whacked on their stomach and throat with a stick. It looked surreal man! One senior even had to lie on the floor while a black belt stood on a table to jump down to his stomach! That was the scariest. What the seniors did looked mostly effortless but visually scary.
Here's a joke a mate told me during class: Which martial artiste actor needs the most water? Answer: Bruce Lee, cuz he always says 'Wa-taaah' before every move'. I thought it was 'A-taaah'? the Japanese are the ones who says stuff like Wataah. Ah well.
