I feel like I should change my blogskin, as it's been some time back since my last blog post...and I am in a completely different environment, let alone, country. But I still like the format of this blogskin as it can accommodate my pictures well, so I'll just stick with it.
Let me start with today. I love it when I get to go to work at 11am instead of 7am and work just half a day. I have time to shower and have a lunch at the right timing when I should have it...though my hair got all frizzy at work as I barely had time (what do you know. I'm always running late) to apply some hair moisturiser to it. Actually, I got tired at one point, I don't know why. My work situation was that we were somewhat busy. Is it because of the 8 hours' of sleep I got? sweet.
A really funny incident happened at work which got me chuckling. You know what are Shirley Temples? It's Sprite with a few splashes of Grenadine (pomegranate syrup/juice). The server I was working under, Raul (a really wonderfully chatty Mexican guy), told me to put in 3 cherries instead of just the usual one. He said he wants the 'dreamico' or something (meaning kid in Espanol) to dip his little hands inside and get all messy. So I tutted at him and said 'you want to give the parents touble huh'. and he said 'no, kids love that and it keeps them busy. I'm helping the parents.' So ok. I amusedly put in 3 cherries into the Shirley Temple and he went to the table. I followed him as I had to reset the neighbouring table. Sure enough, once the drink was set in front of him, the kid gave a squeal of delight and happily started dipping his fingers into the drink and fishing for the chrries in such a typically childish way. Boy did it take me a lot to stop myself from bursting out laughing. Of course I had a foolishly broad smile on my face while I was resetting the table. I didn't dare to look at the next table for fear that the parents had suspected me & Raul of spiking their kid's drink or something. And Raul came to me and whispered 'look at the kid' and I whispered back 'yeahyeah, you know kids really well cuz you have 5 of them'. Back in the kitchen, Raul said to me something along the lines of 'I told you so' and I accused him of being too naughty. lol
Another funnlily weird incident this time. While I was out at the entrance of the dining room telling the host to seat me a table of 4 if possible, I saw this man and a youngish guy looking at the desserts out front. I thought the guy was really good-looking on first impression, with wavy black hair, and well-dressed with a scarf and form-fitting clothes (like skinny jeans and a sweater). It's what those artsy-type of people usually dress as la. So anyway, I realized they were going to be seated in my section and was gleeful. But then after, when I took their order for the drinks, the guy smiled sweetly and asked soft-spokenly for a Ginger Ale (I told him I THINK we have that). It was my first order for that ever as a busser (I've been officially working for about 5 days now?). I knew 3 things. That he was gay. That he was going to be petty/trouble. And that I was turned off. Another server made that drink for me in the kitchen while rolling his eyes. It's actually really easy to make. Lots of sprite with a few splashes of coke.
The situation got even more amusing. Raul went to their table to get their food orders while I was serving them drinks and the man asks the guy, 'and what would YOU like to order RAUL?' and Raul Sr had this look on his face which was funny. His eyes got all big and I knew he was amused. I know
I was amused because the two Rauls cannot be any more different. And I know he has a son called Raul Jr something. Raul Sr is stocky, mascular, mustachy in that wrestler way while that Raul at the table has milky smooth skin and is slim. And then I came to think that the man and guy at the table was weird because the man is a white guy while the guy is bordering on a boy, and didn't seem white. I was like, 'sugar daddy?"
One last incident. There was this table which i served sodas and then the dad was like, 'we wouldn't be needing any refills' and smiled broadly. I was like, 'er, ok' and didn't make any further comment because I wasn't sure if he was joking or not. turned out he wasn't joking as when I went back to the table to ask if they wanted refills while forgetting what he told me earlier, he said 'no refills'. I mean, refills are free at my workplace. I assumed the server had told them that so I didn't bother to remind them again. Heck, it makes my job much easier.
Anyway, I made a resolution today. that from now on, instead of just greeting the diners, pouring the water and asking if they'd like to order any other drinks, I'll introduce myself as well and give them some more info. From tomorrow onwards, I'll be approaching tables like this:
(while pouring the water into their glasses): "Good morning/afternoon! How're you guys today?"
and then when they finish giving their answers and when I've positively affirmed or give little comments about their answers, I'll say, "my name in Uni and I'll be taking care of all your drinks today. Anything other than alcohol as the server is only allowed to do that at the bar. We give free refills so let me know anytime you need them." Something like that.
And I don't know why, but the diners like to stare at me while I work (especially if they're waiting for their food and have these tense expressions on their faces). I mean, if they're single and gorgeous-looking like this son was a few days ago, i'm very fine with it. but if they're alone at a table with their woman and then the woman turns around to look at what her man was staring at, and then glares at me, it's so awkward. Do I look like competition? I don't wear make-up to work on most days and I've always assumed I look young (as young as a student) but when people have been calling me 'Ma'am' and 'lady' these few days, I begin to get a clearer impression of myself, you know?
And I'm busy making my August-September travel plans and accounting/reporting them to my mum, my future travel mate. I've somewhat finished the first leg of my trip, which is Las Vegas. Still have 3 more legs to go. About LV, I want to catch 3 shows- Jubilee (the best showgirls show), O by Cirque du Soleil and The Blue Man Group. I mean, other than shows and shopping, what else is a MUST-DO when you're there with your mum huh? she only wants to catch Jubilee and can't understand why must we spend all that money on the other shows, let alone shows in general even back in Singapore as what she conveyed to me over the phone with her just now. I guess it's going to be a job for me to convince her what Vegas is all about.
