Trying to juggle all my activities for this school semester have been pretty CRAzy.
Wednesday: Final Theory practice questions session at 4-5pm. Only had time to do 4 1/2 booklets out of 11. and I failed (meaning less than 92/100) like, 2 or 3 booklets. After that session ended, I had to rush to school for lecture at 6pm. Realised I took the wrong train. And then realized I could have taken a faster alternative route after I got off my usual train station.
Lecture 6-9pm.
9-10pm: Being the last person allowed to stand in the bus. It's the 2nd time this week. I notice I could choose to be THAT person or one of those who gets squished among many people in the middle of the bus. It's all about choosing the right busstop to wait for the bus :) But anyway, other than getting slapped about by the doors a few times, i've learnt the art of holding on and how to shift my body's center of gravity to suit me.
Thursday: 8-9.40am: Driving lesson. Drove out of the circuit and unto the main road for the first frickin time today, yay! There was one moment where I stalled the engine 3 freaking times in the middle of the road. I was kinda freaking out and my foot on the clutch pedal seemed to have a mind of its own. And there was this red van behind me who was nice enough not to horn at me while i frantically tried to *finally* move off. Felt.so.embarrassed. But my instructor kept saying 'Take it easy, be happy!' so many times. haha! thanks, Mr Tan. At one point, he even sangsaid "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands!", and he told me to take my hand off the steering wheel to clap! I didn't know whether to laugh out loud cuz I so knew he was only half-joking. lol! He told me to do that to convince me to loosen my iron grip on the wheel. So yeah, it felt surreally silly yet awesome trying to do a clapping 'trick' for my instructor while driving.
I also noticed that i'm slow enough to be overtaken by public buses and taxis who were tailgating me at first.
9.50-11.30am= Final Theory Lesson. Thought that the videos shown in class were pretty cool. Stuff like how rainy days and heavy traffic can easily and unexpectedly cause many road accidents all at once. It's like the butterfly effect theory. And then also how quick reaction can truly save your life. But then, the coordinator went on to say that a person will usually react the opposite of what he learns. So it's all up to the individual to save himself. :O
7-9pm= Jammed for the first time. Things are looking good. Good thing the members like my voice, haha. And I also realise I can sing almost any note. As in, pitching is not a problem for me. They reckon I've been practising the 3 songs a lot, but honestly, I haven't been. When I practise, it's just to get the tune right, or to improvise on the lyrics on my own just for fun, and to make it sound cooler. Honestly, i believe vocal song practice is necessary but not a means to a perfect delivery. If you've got the voice, you've got it. If you haven't, then live with it. You can't fool yourself in thinking you can sing EXACTLY like the original singer. And my vocal teacher once told me, people are limited in sounding good for certain types of songs. Not for every song they happen to fancy.
Friday:
2-5pm: Lecture 5.5.30pm: Psychology vocal-mental experiment for Singaporean females. I get paid 5 bucks. More on that tomorrow, after it's over. 7-9pm: Going to attend an introductory Aikido class in schoool!
Saturday:
2-5pm: Possibly attending another introductory martial arts session in school.
It's my second driving practical session today and the instructor got me to move the car immediately. Because I hadn't gotten a chance to do that in the first session.
He seemed bored and it was in contrast to my newbie eager/nervous (it's a fine line i tell ya) state today. However, he was nice enough.
So i spent about 90minutes plus today practising how to move off and stop. And driving around the beginner's circuit. And changing from 1st to 2nd gear, and it's just a little bit confusing with a manual car.
But, the teaching progress was just right, i got to drive round and practise my moves like what seemed a gazillion times today, going round and round but enjoying every minute of it. Haha
It gave me the thrills, just hearing the engine start(which i did so repeatedly because i sometimes released the clutch pedal too quickly), and revving it up when i'm moving off, and the whole idea of being in control of this big machine which can transport and did indeed transport at least two people today.
I'm taking my Basic Theory Test on friday (finally!) and will get my driver's provisional licence immediately to drive out on the roads, if I pass the test.
I have also booked another driving lesson after the test on that day. so if I can drive impressively well (decently is good enough, but it doesn't do any harm to be all motivated up right?) around the circuit, the instructor may ask me to drive out into the real world. ha.
(As you can see in the pic below, it is early in the morning....the calm before the storm...before the barricades were opened & i had time to mess around with my camera)
ok, to me, Sunday at Singfest was nothing like singing. As in, singing along happily and merrily to all the songs i know.
let me break it down.
I had wanted to arrive at the venue (Fort Canning Park) at around 8-8.30am on Sunday morning, which if you don't know already, day 2 of Singfest was taking place. However, my dad changed his mind and decided not to drive me there, blahblahblah. Long story short, he decided to send me after all, but only at 9.15am did he change his mind and was properly awake. So I FINALLY reached the venue a little before 10am. There were already like, 20 people sitting down and forming a queue, so i just joined in at the end, and plopped myself down. I sent out a flurry of smses telling people i was already there and to come pick me out when they do arrive. And then, i got an awesome call from this person, who is the organiser of 'the group of people who had boldly decided to go to singfest alone', i had come to know of her through the singfest forum and she was one of the people i smsed. So anyway, she told me to come all the way to the front cuz she was there with a few others already. I was pleasantly surprised by this fact because she had told me she was only meeting up with the group at 9am at the mrt and would be arriving at 10am. So i picked up my stuff, kept walking and walking... past the suckers who were previously lining up in front of me..... passing by a few mraz wannabes on the way, decked out in their fedoras.... till i found her. She was like, 2nd in line. Awesome right?? She told me she was there because she felt like just coming early, though she was at Singfest on day 1 and had left at 3am but was back to queue at around 8am. And also because she happened to know the 2nd person of the day there who was lining up since 6.45am. Crazy stuff i tell ya. They told me the first loner man in line in front of us (who was dozing away with his cap down) had stayed overnight. Kudos to him man!
They were cool peeps. Obviously very passionate about music and the bands there. We chatted, and waited and they shared their experience from the previous day. They said they had skipped dinner, was moshing most of the time, and mostly importantly, had dashed all the way to the stage when the gates opened. Little did i know what i was in for. After that, Mraz fans arrived. Yay. I had agreed to meet up with a few of them- 2 sisters and a filipino lawyer (meg).
We were an odd bunch but more power to us man. Mraz united us. We were just settling in at around noon, and chatting about Mraz when the singfest peeps just suddenly opened up the barriers without any warning, and people just started dashing through them, and past us. What the hell! They were jumping the queue like no body's business. So our group all just stopped whatever we were doing, picked up whatever we could and made a run for the starting point of the barricades too. In the end, ten people got ahead of us. And they still didn't open up the entrance. We were told they would only start letting people in at 2pm. So everone all just sat down again. Which was immensely stupid.
Anyway, i decided to start making my Mraz poster which I had totally forgot about, and we worked as a team. The sisters scotch-taped the white paper to the cardboard for me when meg went out for a smoke and i was chatting on the phone for a moment. And then i wrote out the words. I was thinking how to finish the words "Meet and greet us, ____" J? Jason? Mraz? Mr- A-Z? I wanted Mr. Jason because Meg was telling me a funny story about him, how he complained about ppl calling him that when he was in the Philippines 2 years ago. And then Meg was like, "no0, don't be mean to our Jason!" and then i was like, "but that will really catch his attention right?? jolt his memory a bit." In the end we all agreed we should emphasise 'Mraz', so check out our finished product below. Kudos to Meg for doing the drawing of Mraz and the butterflies (which she had copied from his latest album booklet).
I could only add in some hearts, a peace sign and a lone butterfly. whatever. Meg was the artist among us. and it's the thought that counts right? After that, I coloured in the word MRAZ and the sisters coloured in the rest of the words. It was a true team effort indeedy.
TADA!
I tried contacting 3 other Mraz fans after that, but they were somewhere in queue behind us and besides, there was no more space for them to sit down with us. The barricades ensured that. So I told them we'll try to meet them later, inside. Finally, close to 2pm, they opened up the gates. After wearing my black entrance wristband, i walked past singfest people giving out flyers to people. Apparently they didn't think i was worth giving stuff to. because by the time I regrouped with my groups again inside, they were wearing like, extra neon yellow and white wristbands (for whatever reason) and each had, 2 meet and greet contest forms. What the hell. Anyway, the sisters kindly gave me one. We had a choice to meet One Republic, Mraz or Alicia Keys. And was supposed to drop it in the contest box at the nokia booth somewhere inside and would be smsed the result if we won. Anyway, none of us got round to dropping off the forms. Because we just made a mad dash to the stage after they had made us wait at another entrance for one hour standing under the fucking hot sun. During that one-hr period, i had gotten news from someone else that mraz had just arrived in Singapore and quite a lot of fans were waiting for him at the airport. Of course, given that moment under the blazing weather and compared to the air-con airport, i was a bit jealous of those who were at the airport. But then, i cheered up when i knew i just might be front row centre of the stage when jason was playing, where those fans at the airport most likely wouldn't be. ha.
So we were like, at the 3rd row, centre of the stage. The view was spectacular and the stage was surpisingly intimate and jutting out near to the barricade. And there were all these young girls around me who didn't block my view. It seems i'm slightly taller than your average Singaporean girl out there. hehe. I sat down with meg before stacie orrico came on. That was a fucking relief, and especially as no one else around us sat down, and we were suddenly shaded by all of them, down where we were. You should try that sometime. Sitting down in the middle of a moshpit and seeing all these converse sneakers around you. It was a cosy and surreal spot with people's legs around you. haha.
So stacie started like, 20 minutes later. She's an ok performer lor. It was fun only because we were in front and she could interact with us. She was singing to minus-one tracks, no 'live' band. But since she's good on vocals and acted like she was having fun, we rocked out with her too. All the others around me were just staring at her lor, so i think i was the only one who was singing along to her lyrics.
After she finished, Meg and I sat down again till jamie scott & the town came on. His looks are boyishly cute but so typical. He looks like lee from the defunct boyband, blue, and like any other boy-next door. At first, i was really bored with his first song or so. But soon, i appreciated the fact that there was a young and cute cello player rocking out on his red instrument and a huge bass was supporting Jamie too. And i liked that Jamie sounded like a girl. At least, i was entertained by that fact for a while. He sounded like Damien Rice (whom i love) cum Missy Higgins or something. And he was really polite but friendly to the audience. which makes him a nice guy. ^Check out the cuuute cello player. I spotted a ring on his wedding finger but that didn't stop me from oogling him heaps. hehehe
So after jamie finished, we sat again. I know! We're really lazy concert-goers huh? But it's only cuz we were trying to conserve as much energy as we could for Jason ok? One republic came out soon after. here's a funny story. While we were waiting for one republic, people spotted this guy wearing a fedora hat and vest and were saying "Oh my god, there's Mraz! He's here already. oh my god, jasssson!", and i was tiptoeing and leaning my head, trying to spot him too. Yep, i could see a fedora hat. a guy was wearing it. and then he started walking out with the band...and i was like, "oh my god! he's walking out with the band! is he gonna perform a duet with one republic???" but then i saw that this guy's face looked a little pudgy and eyes were a little beady to really be mraz. It wasn't till he sat down at the piano till I said out loud, "What the hell, that isn't Mraz la!". It was the frontman of One Republic.
^Jason doesn't EVER play with piano onstage...
^ah, but maybe here yes? his face still looks a little pudgy though, compared to Jason...
And he was really really good. He walked around while singing a couple of songs, let his members take the spotlight now and then. Reached out to a fan and sang to her. haha. I love their music. Piano, cello again, a little rock.
Very nice. And the singer's vocals are superb. He can sing a very high range, like Darren Hayes from savage garden, and he was vocally perfect. I think they're starting this new wave of genre. Piano-rock or something (like this other band called Augustana whose song Boston I <3).
^show us your wedding ring eh?
I'm a new fan of One Republic now (which i knew i would be before attending Singfest) and have respect for them. Oh, special mention to the scruffy-haired lead guitarist. You could see he was really good.
^another cuuute player. This time no ring on finger so i could take time to fantasise a bit.
^hotness. no wedding ring anywhere in sight.
I kept staring at him play, at his fingers, while the singer was on the piano. When the singer was on the piano, my view would be blocked so I focused my attention on the guitarist, whom i had an open view of. I wanted him to see that i really appreciated his playing, but he seemed pretty shy, just focusing on his instrument a lot and jerking around while rocking out. After giving a very worthwhile show, one republic left the stage. And meg and I couldn't seat down already because people were moving closer in.
It was obvious that they were preparing to mosh. I thought the moshing would be tame, because they were all young girls around me. Seriously, not one guy was front, left, right or behind me. Wow, i was sorely proven wrong. When Panic at the disco came on, it was-- total pushing, shoving, elbowing, hat slapping, rib-poking. You name it, it probably happend to me in that one hour set of Panic's. I was very miserable. like seriously, very miserable. meg was too, and she was giving me very strained smiles and getting pushed further away from me by the crowd. I had to keep shrugging this girl's arms off my back. I could tell she was pushing me for no fucking reason other than to look hyper. I totally lost the 2 sisters too.
Also, for the whole time, i thought i would collapse, I was like keeping my head up as high as i could and getting air. And i kept glaring at brandon for not saying something to thhe moshpit people, like "take care of each other" or, "know your limits" like what Good Charlotte did at their concert. GC had actually stopped their concert in Singapore for a moment and chided the moshpit people. but not panic. That brandon was like one madman onstage. That fellow never stopped moving his mouth and body- like he just took ice or something you know? he was drenched from head to toe. Even when he didn't realise his mic wasn't working for one to two songs, he kept us entertained. well, i wasn't exactly entertained (because i was too busy fighting for my survival in the moshpit because all the girly fans made sure they showed Brandon they were singing and making up for his lipsyncing, no, body-syncing debacle) but that moment provided comic relief to me for a few seconds.
I don't know how the hell meg and I survived Panic's set but survived we did. And i hated when Panic sang that line "exchanging body heat" off one of their songs. I wanted to scream at brandon, "you have no fucking idea! I'm rubbing arms and sweat with everyone around me. and it feels like i'm in hell here!"
^the photos above were moments before the guitarist Ryan threw his pick right at me, and all the girls went crrrrazy. I had to pretend to go down and grab the pick too, to prevent being pushed aside by the girls.
held on through the panic set we did, for our angel Mraz. Panic's set ended and I was never ever more relieved in my entire life. ever. Luckily, they started giving out cups and bottles of water to people and i grabbed and shared whatever i could. Thank you Singfest, for having the sanity to think of us moshpit people. Whew. So before Jason started, i was a little hydrated up and now at second row, and right smack in the center. I was getting excited when i saw his band members walking out, i knew all their faces and names. And I got more excited when i saw a crew guy testing jason's guitar with the stickers on it (and the same guitar strap he used everywhere, which looked a little greyer and mouldy, lol). aww...it truly felt surreal. I screamed the saxophone player's name when he was near me, but he didn't hear. ah well. Then Jason walked out of nowhere and started warming up the crowd with a melody. check it out below:
Anyway, for Jason's set, he rushed through all the songs. And i felt like i had seen all he had to offer, many times before on youtube. I don't know, i was hoping he would add in lots of extra lyrics about Singapore. But for some reason, he kept speaking Spanish and saying, "Gracias". Like, speak Mandarin or Malay la, or even Tamil. But spanish? -_- I was hoping i would be blown away by Jason, but firstly, he didn't look happy to be there. He didn't once smile while singing (like Stacie Orrico did numerous times. she has charisma). At least, i didn't see him do that. And i was front-row center mind you. Maybe he's an intense performer or something and was trying to impress on that day? I don't know. Usually he's more easy-going, at ease, and more...Mrazzy. And he didn't have breaks in between songs for us fans to shout out "We love you!", "You're sexy!", "you're hot!", etc. I was hoping he'd look at me when he sang Live High, because it's one of my favourite songs on his new album and because my video of him in france walking-singing that song is like, a youtube mraz hit (like, 150,000 views). So yeah, it holds a special place in my heart because like, I discovered the song and shared that awesome video with the world and everything. It's this video:
And the lyrics for it are intriguing and inspiring to me. But during the song, jason's head was mostly turned in the other direction. Sad :( he sang a lot of his radio songs like the remedy, geek in the pink which i thought was cheesy. I was expecting to hear him sing more older and other songs and even play them acoustically. Did not happen.
Anyway, moving on to the good stuff. Naturally, i was singing every single word to all his songs and rocking out the whole time. AND, when he sang I'm Yours, I held up the banner the entire time. The whole time I was thinking, 'if you really mean what you say about 'i'm yours', then you better try to come out and meet us afterwards damn it!', cuz that's what he's been doing in other countries.
he ended I'm Yours with a verse or two from another song, Bob Marley's 3 little birds and there was one line which went, "this is my message to you", and he totally pointed at me and held it for a few brief seconds while he sang that line. So it seemed he was acknowledging my banner. Also, when he sang another favourite song of mine, Butterfly, and ended with the line 'Yoooou've got it all..." He pointed at me again first, and held his point for those few precious seconds before pointing to the rest of the audience. I got your signals J, and i was very happy about it. But we fans wanted something more. Maybe you could pick a more cosy venue next time and take your time to play for at least 2 hours yeah?
When he ended, Meg and I got the hell out of there. It was a long and slow walk among the masses to try to find some grass space to sit down. We found a spot near the mobile toilets and sat down a while to recuperate and enjoy the evening breeze.
Then we went to get bottles of coke and water hehe. And then we rested somemore and decided to walk to the carpark (which happened to be right in front of the backstage area!) to try to spot the tour buses (if any). We saw Singfest security guarding the place and directing traffic, and we chatted with them to ask if they knew whether Mraz had come out yet. Since they didn't possess walkie-talkies, they didn't have any inside info for us. We then wanted to go back in to catch PCD and asked the security if there were any shortcuts. He pointed us in a direction and said something like, 'don't let the ushers see you and chase you away.' Where he pointed at was actually a stone wall separating the concert venue to the outside park. And there were actually many people there, half-squatting or sitting, illegally trying to watch Singfest for free. It was pretty hilarious to see them silently trying to catch a free show like that, but the view to the stage was terrible and blocked by a lot of trees. We tried to jump down the wall to the other side but the Singfest staff wouldn't let us, saying we had to come in by the main entrance again. %$#@$!#
We then decided to just stay at the carpark to stick around and hear any Mraz news.
I invited all the Mraz fans to join us but they all said they were too tired, except for this 15 yr old boy/fan who eagerly came out to stake out with us.
So we missed Rick Astley, Pussycat Dolls and most of Alicia Keys to try to catch Jason.
The security at singfest was very nonsensical. don't get me started. we were asked to sit like, a few metres away from the curbside on the side of the backstage entrance area. But we thought that was ridiculous and too far, so I asked if we could just sit on the curbside opposite instead. The ridiculous answer we got was 'Yes, you could.' So we sat there for close to 2 hours to wait for Mraz. Also, while waiting around, I really needed to pee but was told by the security staff that the nearest toilet was at the main entrance. I asked if I could just pop in the backstage area for a second to use the loos there (because I had earlier saw on a map that they had loos there) and he said, "no, but you could try the ones at the museum." No way, I wasn't gonna leave the spot and miss seeing Jason leave.
His band actually came out first after 1/2 hour, to board a bus and the saxophone player (carlos) told me Jason hadn't come out yet. When I was talking to carlos, a singfest security person stepped intimidatingly close to me and said, "no stepping in this area, you have to move back", and started pulling me away. Like what the hell, he totally interrupted my conversation and I had to abruptly end it. Carlos could only ask for my name. Looking back, I should have ignored the security person and asked Carlos what the band's schedule was going to be like in Singapore, and I should have passed him my letter to Jason.
When the band's bus left, we waited and waited and could hear Rick, PCD and Alicia in the background. A few other vans with tinted windows came out too (and we would hold up the Mraz meet & greet banner), and there was one van which i saw the silhouette outline of Nicole Sherzinger wearing star-shaped earrings! She looked very sexy. Also, for some reason, i couldn't see the other PCD members inside at all...hmm. So i just waved at the PCD van with the very tinted windows, just for fun.
Finally Mraz came out! He walked out of the backstage area, and walked towards a waiting bus outside. Us 3 fans shouted "We love you, Jason!", but neither did he respond nor heard. He just continued talking to this Asian woman whom I think was a Singfest or Warner person because she got on the bus with him. Jason boarded the bus too and two other people (who suddenly appeared from nowhere) rushed to his window to take a photo for each other. Jason made a wacky, 'splattered window' expression for them, lol, and i watched on, amused. Actually, I was more horrified. Like, I was put off by the grotesque pose Jason was making at the window- he was sticking his tongue out and all with his hands and fingers spread out pressed against the window and was like, posing like a 'caged animal look', you know what I mean?
One of us also held up the sign again and i don't know if he saw. And Meg just took a shot with flash of him sitting in the bus, and when we viewed it on her camera, it seemed like Jason was doing a hand sign. We later theorized what he meant. What we theorized about him wasn't nice. lol.
^but then, Meg lightened the picture and sent me a few days later and we saw that he was actually trying to move his bag! So we were wrong in thinking that he was being rude or sarcastic to us. Pfft
Anyway, he just waved at us a few times and the bus drove off. He was gone just like that. We were kinda disappointed but we tried to understand that he must have been tired or something (we already had bad vibes from him when he was onstage. like, he was out of tune for certain parts of the song Live High. The only few times Jason is out of tune is when he is sick..or exhausted like we thought he was that night). i wanted to pass him a letter telling him how quite many of us fans bought tickets alone and flew in even from the Philippines and Malaysia to catch him and also tell him how we endured those crazy PanicATD fans...
Looking back, I have now learnt NEVER to wait around after shows for tour buses again. Because, when I looked back on this immensely failing experience, I remembered that not once have I managed to catch a band by the carpark area before in Singapore. Not for Christina Aguilera, nor Good Charlotte, nor My Chemical Romance, nor Westlife.
Actually, I was soso mad that Jason didn't come out to talk to the few of us (note: i had always thought i would SURELY meet him easily and that I'd come away really inspired by whatever he says to me.). That night however, I was thinking, 'he just isn't in the mood to interact with us' or, 'he just doesn't respect us enough to make a bit of effort'. Dark thoughts of him being racist ran through my mind. I kept muttering to the others that he's- such a diva, arrogant fellow etc. And the boy fan declared right there and then that he wanted to sell off the two albums of Jason's which he just bought. loL. Meg told him not to be rash and silly. I just laughed begrudgingly and didn't add in any comments.
But after talking to an Aussie fan (who have met Jason twice) on his message boards and also to people who've stalked other celebrities before, I was told this:
1) Jason's not like that usually. In fact, for a music festival in Australia, no other artists came out after the show but only he did. And he took photos, talked to everyone. I was told by the fan that 'Jason's too nice to be arrogant'.
2) Singfest's security or maybe his record label warned him not to interact with us.
3) Because then, he would (or might have been) be mobbed by a lot of people, though it seemed at first sight like there were only 3 of us there.
Anyway, we went straight back in to the concert venue again to try to catch Alicia Keys. But actually, my mood was already seriously dampened, and i was just oblivious to whatever Alicia was singing, and I asked to go home after hearing 2 songs, giving the excuse that I was bored and it was getting late.
Shared a cab home with Meg and paid like, $20+ for the fare because there was the 50% midnight surcharge. I reached home at 1am. During the journey, the cab driver gave me a rambling preach and shared his life story about how he was a traveling musician (guitarist)in his heydays and that he actually traveled with lots of Hong Kong (like Andy Lau) and Taiwanese stars, even with the BeeGees once on tour and long story short, he was trying to convince me not to be too sad or expect much from stalking celebrities and to rationalise why I REALLY like an artiste like Jason Mraz and told me to strive to attain Jason's skills since I admire him/them so much. What he said really got me thinking. But that's another story. So I shall end here.
My closing conclusion: I will NEVER go to a moshpit concert again. Actually, I had already told myself that after attending My Chemical Romance's concert, but I guess I was too caught up with catching Jason 'live'. Even labeling seeing Jason 'live', as an activity on my 'to do before i die' list. :P
Two days have passed since Sunday, i have slightly recovered from Singfest (after being bummed the whole day on Monday), and considered trying to attempt stalking Jason at the hotel/airport and hopefully have a better experience (but in the end, nothing turned out of it because I was too late), while the boyfan has vowed to start a proper fan club for Mraz sometime soon. I told him to call it 'street team'. SO, just for kicks...
^For now, this is as close to Mraz as I can get.Couldn't even talk to him when he was down for Singfest.grrr.I should have hijacked & torn down this poster that day...i'd love to have it up in my room.
